Are You Sinking?
"It
is not our being in the world that ruins us, but out suffering the world to be
in us: just as ships sink, not by being
in the water, but by water getting into them!”
A.
R. Fasusset (1821-1910)
Worldliness is nothing new. Mankind has been enticed by the things of the
world despite there being no internet, social media, pornography, sexual
revolution or drug epidemic. Just
because past generations traveled in a wagon to go to town and send a message by telegraph did not exempt them from engaging in sinful thoughts, behaviors or
disgraceful speech. Christians live and
function in the midst of a perverse society that continually calls our
name. Some have taken on too many
earthly attributes and are drowning in the cesspool of standards set by
society. We are sinking.
John 17:14-17
14 I
have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of
the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do
not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep
them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the
world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify
them by Your truth. Your word is truth.
Only the word of God
keeps us afloat. As long as we remain
here, it is the daily meditation and study of God’s truth that keeps the world
and its ways a safe distance away.
Sanctification occurs by taking on the word and not the world. We are transformed by the renewing of our
mind. We see life differently and what
looked so enticing before becomes a scourge.
Our desires are redirected from what looks good to what is good. Before you can be filled, there are some worldly attitudes and behaviors that must be emptied from our lives. You know what needs to go so start dumping all the
extraneous worldly ways that preoccupy your mind before you find yourself
sinking.
